Parenting a Child in Therapy

Updated: Oct 4

Supporting a child in therapy can be a delicate and important task. Here are some tips on how to healthily parent and support a child in therapy:

Normalise Therapy: Talk openly and positively about therapy to reduce any stigma associated with it. Explain that therapy is a safe place for them to express themselves and get support.

Respect Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of the therapy sessions. Let your child know that what they discuss in therapy is private unless they express a desire to share something with you.

Validate Feelings: Encourage your child to express their feelings and validate their emotions. Let them know that it's okay to feel a range of emotions and that you are there to support them.

Encourage Attendance: Support your child in attending their therapy sessions regularly, both practically and emotionally. Help them understand the importance of consistency in therapy for progress.

Be Patient: Therapy is a process, and it may take time for your child to see progress. Be patient and understanding, and avoid putting pressure on them to "get better" quickly.

Be Open to Feedback: Be open to feedback from your child's therapist and willing to make any necessary changes to support your child's progress.

Practise Active Listening: Listen actively to your child without judgement. Let them know that you are there to listen and support them, no matter what.

Model Healthy Coping Skills: Model healthy coping skills for your child by managing your own stress in healthy ways. This can include practising self-care, seeking support when needed, and using positive coping strategies.

Stay Involved: Stay involved in your child's therapy process by attending sessions when asked, and communicate regularly and respectfully with their therapist.

Be Empathetic: Show empathy towards your child's experiences and struggles. Let them know that you understand and are there to support them unconditionally.

Remember that every child is different, so it's essential to adapt these tips to fit your child's individual needs and personality. Additionally, consider seeking support for yourself if you find that supporting your child in therapy is challenging or overwhelming.
