Using the Pomodoro Technique to Manage Overwhelm

Updated: Oct 4

The Pomodoro Technique was developed in the late 1980s by student Francesco Cirillo. Using this technique is a great way to manage overwhelm and increase productivity. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Set a Timer: Choose a task you want to work on and set a timer for 25 minutes. This time frame is called a "Pomodoro."

  2. Work on the Task: Focus solely on the task at hand for the entire 25 minutes. Avoid distractions and interruptions as much as possible.

  3. Take a Short Break: Once the 25 minutes are up, take a short break of 5 minutes. Use this time to stretch, walk around, or do something relaxing.

  4. Repeat: After the break, start another Pomodoro session with the same task or a new one if you've completed the previous task.

  5. Long Break: After completing four Pomodoros (or after about 2 hours), take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. This break allows you to recharge before starting another round of Pomodoros.

Here are some additional tips to manage overwhelm using the Pomodoro Technique:

  • Prioritise tasks: Start with the most important or urgent tasks first.

  • Break tasks into smaller chunks: If a task feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller, more manageable parts.

  • Eliminate distractions: Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and create a focused work environment.

  • Be flexible: If you find yourself struggling to focus or feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to adjust the Pomodoro intervals to better suit your needs.

  • Celebrate accomplishments: Acknowledge your progress after each Pomodoro or at the end of the day. This can help boost motivation and reduce feelings of overwhelm.

By using the Pomodoro Technique, you can break through overwhelm by focusing on short bursts of work followed by regular breaks, helping you stay productive and maintain a healthy balance.
